Oscar Shortlists Announced: Italy’s “Playing God” Makes the Cut

The Academy has announced the shortlists for the upcoming Oscars, and while Francesco Costabile’s film did not make the cut, Italy’s “Playing God” by Mattia Burani has been included in the shortlist of the 15 best animated shorts. This is a significant achievement, considering the film was selected from a pool of 113 short films from around the world.

The shortlist for the best international film includes a diverse range of countries, with films such as “Belén” (Argentina), “The Secret Agent” (Brazil), and “The President’s Cake” (Iraq) making the cut. The full list of shortlisted films can be found on the Academy’s website.

Italy’s “Playing God” Competes in Animated Shorts Category

“Playing God” is a seven-minute animated short film about a tormented artist who tries to create a human figure with ideal proportions. The film, directed by Mattia Burani, features terracotta creatures inspired by Niccolò dell’Arca and was produced by Studio Croma in Bologna. To be considered for a nomination, “Playing God” will need to overcome the next step, which is the announcement of the nominations on January 22.

In addition to “Playing God,” the Academy also announced shortlists in 12 other categories, including original songs. The Italian documentary “Viva Verdi” by Yvonne Russo features a song called “Sweet Dreams of Joy,” which has been selected as one of the 15 original songs.

Other Notable Films and Categories

Other films that have performed well in the shortlists include “Sinners and Wicked: For Good,” which has received the highest number of preliminary nominations. The Spanish film “Sirât” has also had a good showing, as have films like “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” and “Marty Supreme.” The Academy has also selected 15 documentaries from a pool of 201 eligible films, including “The Alabama Solution” and “Apocalypse in the Tropics.”
