Unity in the Face of Tragedy: Estra Pistoia Basket and RSR Sebastiani Rieti Join Forces Against Violence in Sports

Estra Pistoia Basket and RSR Sebastiani Rieti are set to face each other again tomorrow at 6 pm in Pistoia, marking the first encounter since the tragic loss of Raffaele Marianella, a driver of the red and white fans’ bus, who died in an ambush after the first leg match on October 19. Since then, the two clubs have been working together to implement initiatives that support Marianella’s family and promote awareness among fans about the fight against violence in sports.

A Series of Events to Promote Unity and Inclusion

Tomorrow’s match will feature a series of events, made possible through collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, prefects, police commissioners, and municipal administrations. In the morning, a mini-basketball match will take place between the children of Willie Basket Rieti and their peers from Pistoia Basket. The delegation from Rieti will also visit the city and Lumosquare, where they will watch the match in the Curva Firenze, alongside their peers from Pistoia, to “launch a further message of sharing and inclusion also in the stands”.

During the presentation of the teams, players from both teams will wear special shirts, created by Lumos and Conad Nord Ovest, with the claim ‘Beyond colours’. The children participating in the event will also wear the same shirt, symbolizing the unity and inclusivity that sports should promote. Furthermore, during the interval, the young participants will engage in a special match, all wearing the same t-shirt, to demonstrate that sports should “unite and not divide”.

A Shared Commitment to a Better Future

According to Pistoia Basket CEO Andrea Di Nino, the two clubs have been working together since the tragic incident to “unite two cities in the memory of Marianella”. Tomorrow’s event aims to make the Curva Firenze a “laboratory for the future of sport”, where young generations can come together, beyond their team colors. Roberto Pietropaoli, the owner of RSR Sebastiani Rieti, hopes that this initiative will be a starting point for a broader movement, where everyone works together to promote a more positive and inclusive sports culture.

The president of the National Basketball League, Francesco Maiorana, and the president of the Italian Basketball Federation, Giovanni Petrucci, have expressed their support for the initiative. The event serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of unity and respect in sports, and the potential for basketball to bring people together and promote positive values.
