Pope Leo XVI Urges World Leaders to Act on Climate Crisis

Pope Leo XVI has issued a pressing call to action to world leaders, emphasizing the need for urgent attention to the climate crisis. In a video message to bishops and cardinals from the Global South attending the COP30 summit in Brazil, he stressed that the planet is sending unmistakable warnings as extreme weather events become more severe and frequent. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the current rate of global warming is 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels, with far-reaching consequences for ecosystems and human societies.

Climate Crisis: A Moral Imperative

“Creation is crying out in floods, droughts, storms and relentless heat,” the American pontiff said, highlighting the devastating impact of climate change on vulnerable populations. He noted that one in three people now lives in conditions of high vulnerability caused by the climate crisis. As stewards of God’s creation, Church leaders have a moral obligation to act, Pope Leo XVI emphasized, calling for swift, faith-driven action to protect the planet.

The pope stressed that there is still a chance to limit global warming to 1.5°C, but warned that the opportunity is narrowing. He pointed to the Paris Agreement, approved a decade ago, as the strongest tool available for safeguarding both people and the planet. However, he cautioned that the agreement itself is not failing – rather, it is the lack of commitment from world leaders that is hindering progress. “What is failing is the political will of some,” he said, urging governments to embrace leadership based on service rather than short-term interests.

Investing in a Sustainable Future

Pope Leo XVI argued that strong climate action should be seen as an essential investment in the future. “Strong climate actions and policies – both are an investment in a more just and stable world,” he said, as COP30 delegates continued negotiations on emissions, financing, and adaptation. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), every dollar invested in climate change mitigation and adaptation can generate up to three dollars in benefits. By prioritizing climate action, governments can help build fairer economies and more stable societies, ultimately ensuring a more sustainable future for all.
