Discovering Concetto Pozzati: A Tribute to Morandi at Casa Morandi in Bologna
From January 17 to March 15, the Casa Morandi in Bologna is hosting the exhibition “Concetto Pozzati. From and for Morandi”, curated by Maura Pozzati in collaboration with the Concetto Pozzati Archive. This exhibition is part of the Art City Bologna program, which takes place from February 5 to 8. The event pays homage to Concetto Pozzati (1935-2017), a former councilor for culture of the Municipality of Bologna and one of the most important figures in Italian artistic culture after World War II.
Concetto Pozzati: A Life of Artistic Expression
Concetto Pozzati, often referred to as “the corsair of painting”, was known for his eclectic style, which blended Surrealism, Informal, and Pop Art. His artistic journey began with an informal phase, during which he drew inspiration from masters like Magritte and De Chirico. Pozzati’s role as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts and his intellectual openness to dialogue also significantly contributed to his impact on the art world. He wrote several fundamental texts on Giorgio Morandi, including the presentation of the exhibition “Morandi and his time” (1985-1986) and a portrait of Morandi in his diary as a painter.
The Exhibition: A Journey Through Pozzati’s Works
The exhibition “Concetto Pozzati. From and for Morandi” opens with the work “From and for Giorgio Morandi” (1964), marking a significant transition in Pozzati’s style towards a more object-based painting influenced by pop sensibility. The exhibit also features works from the “Restaurazione” cycle (1973), where Pozzati’s images overlap with engravings by Morandi, and pieces from 1974 that combine objects, photographs, and texts in an ironic and experimental language. The exhibition concludes with the series “A casa mia” (2007-2008), an intimate homage to domestic objects as affective presences of family memory. As Maura Pozzati notes, “Here is the robber and kleptomaniac Pozzati, who takes from the history of art and puts his own language into it; he chooses his own painting, his own rose, his own still life, the artist’s palette, producing an extremely entertaining cycle because it opens a period of reflection on art, and for Concetto Pozzati art produces art”.
A Legacy of Artistic Innovation
Concetto Pozzati’s legacy is a testament to his innovative spirit and his ability to blend different artistic styles. His work continues to inspire new generations of artists and art enthusiasts. The exhibition “Concetto Pozzati. From and for Morandi” at Casa Morandi in Bologna is a must-visit for anyone interested in exploring the intersection of art, history, and culture.
