Premier League: Chelsea in Rosenior, 41-year-old coach against the grain

Must Read

Introduction to Liam Rosenior: The New Manager of Chelsea FC

He enjoys an esteem among professionals that is far superior to a curriculum that is anything but extraordinary and, perhaps also for this reason, among Chelsea fans Liam Rosenior – the new manager of the Blues – is the most classic of perfect strangers. Only two years ago he was sacked by Hull City; the redemption arrived on the bench of Strasbourg, a club included in the galaxy of Chelsea ownership. A proximity that allowed the English managers to know and appreciate the work of Rosenior, the first black manager in the history of Stamford Bridge.

Rosenior’s Background and Experience

“It’s an opportunity to which I couldn’t say no”, he said, announcing his move from France to the Premier League even before the official announcement from London, complete with apologies to his Ligue 1 club. His appointment, although in line with the club’s recent line (see predecessor Enzo Maresca), is therefore surprising, and not only because Chelsea is traditionally one of the most demanding clubs in Europe: the English coach – born in London 41 years ago, originally Anglo-Sierra Leonese – in fact he has zero trophies on his board. And it goes against the grain as much as the decision of those who chose it. The Guardian recalls that as a Brighton player Rosenior wrote a column of comments for three years, from which he did not hesitate to say what he thought: from the pride of the opposing manager Bilic, beaten and contested by his fans but elegant in his handshakes with the Brighton players, up to the observation that ethnic origin cannot be a variant of becoming a manager. Until the open letter to Trump, in the days of protests over the killing of Floyd, on his discriminatory policies.

Rosenior’s Coaching Style and Philosophy

Outside England, Rosenior is a name that says little or nothing. And from a footballing point of view, even on the island he has never been associated with the elite. His coaching career developed between Hull and Strasbourg, two very distant contexts in terms of pressure, ambition and visibility. At Hull he had shown good ideas, but without results sufficient to establish himself as an emerging profile. He worked at Strasbourg for 18 months, achieving overall growth in the team, but also in this case without sensational results: a seventh place, a qualification in the Conference League, some exploits against the big teams and a current season that ended in decline. He arrives at Chelsea – with whom he signed a six and a half year contract – more out of internal trust than universally recognized merit: a “system” choice, which also rewards the corporate spirit demonstrated in relations with the management.

An attitude very different from that of Maresca who, in the press conference that cost him his job, had claimed autonomy. From a playing point of view, the new coach proposes orderly football, based on possession and the development of young people, without Copernican inventions or dogmatic extremism. He is not a revolutionary, nor a certified winner. He does not have the aura of a radical innovator, nor the experience of a seasoned manager. He is a prospective technician, yet to be verified at the highest levels. A gamble perhaps even riskier than Maresca’s. Only the field will be able to say whether he is truly a valuable coach or, more simply, someone that no one, until now, had really gotten to know.

Maresca’s Farewell to Chelsea

“Leave this world better than you found it.” Enzo Maresca’s farewell to Chelsea starts from the quotation of the famous phrase by Baden-Powell, founder of the scouts: the now former Blues manager entrusted his farewell message to the London club on social media. “My journey with Chelsea began with the preliminaries of the Conference League – writes Maresca on Instagram -. I leave with the inner peace of leaving a prestigious club like Chelsea where it deserves to be. I would like to thank all the Chelsea people for their support over the last 18 months. Support that has been fundamental for achieving Champions League qualification, victory in the Conference League and victory in the Club World Cup. Victories that I will carry forever in my heart. A special thank you to all the players who accompanied me throughout this splendid journey. I wish all those who shared every moment with me to get the most out of this second part of the season and in the future.”
