Elly Schlein Criticizes Giulia Bongiorno’s Proposal on Sexual Violence
The text of Giulia Bongiorno presented in the Senate commission on sexual violence “is inadmissible”, according to Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, at a press conference in Montecitorio. Schlein expressed her concerns, stating that she “heard from Meloni, I asked him to stop and re-insert consent. There is not a comma mediated with the Democratic Party. They have betrayed women. Meloni must not let the patriarchy and the right dictate his line”, urges the Dem leader.
Schlein recalls the pact made with the prime minister to arrive at a shared text. And instead “this proposal is a step backwards compared to 22 years of jurisprudence which have consolidated consensus which is different from dissent. I told the Prime Minister that if from a good agreement between all the political forces we move on to a negative law for women it is better not to do it”, continues the leader of the Democratic Party.
Opposition to ICE Presence at the Milan Cortina Olympics
Schlein’s press conference also becomes an opportunity to reiterate his party’s opposition to the presence of ICE – the disputed American federal agency – at the Milan Cortina Olympics. “They are not welcome, the mayor of Milan said it very well Sala. It is an armed militia that is killing US citizens in cold blood on the streets. We support the demonstrations calling for ICE to be removed from the streets. If for Plant yourself it’s not a problem, it’s a problem for us,” repeats Elly Schlein.
Proscription Lists and Student Action Census
Schlein also intervenes on the questionnaire that launches the census of left-wing professors by Student Action, the young people of Fratelli d’Italia: “The proscription lists do not adapt to a liberal democracy but to regimes. And since it seems to me that they were made by a youth organization close to FdI I ask Meloni to withdraw this initiative. Avoid exposing professors to risks – continues the dem secretary – These types of initiatives try to point out an enemy, but inevitably they must also assume responsibility of exposing those people to risks of any kind. It is an initiative that must absolutely be opposed and withdrawn, even more so if it comes from an organization close to the Prime Minister”, he concludes.
Voting Rights for Non-Residents
Schlein discusses the importance of granting voting rights to non-residents, stating that “we are in a country where the abstention rate exceeds 50%”. The Democratic Party presented an amendment to the referendum decree to allow non-residents to vote outside their municipality of residence for the next referendum on justice reform, but it was rejected. Schlein argues that “there is no reason in the world to prevent 5 million people from voting. In the last European elections the majority had approved an experiment which only concerned students. They then also extended it to workers for the latest referendums. There is no reason to go back.”
