Italy’s Capital Shatters Tourism Records in 2025

Italy’s capital, Rome, has closed the year 2025 with a remarkable achievement in the tourism sector, attracting a record-breaking 22.9 million visitors and a total of 52.92 million overnight stays. According to the Lazio Bilateral Tourism Board, approximately 12 million of these visitors were international travelers. The city’s tourism industry has seen a significant surge, with a 3.42% increase in visitor numbers and a 2.87% rise in overnight stays compared to the previous year.

The Vatican’s Jubilee Year, a holy event held in Rome every 25 years, coincided with this surge in visitor numbers. Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri welcomed the figures, describing 2025 as “an intense, challenging but very positive year for the city from every perspective.” Gualtieri praised Alessandro Onorato, Rome’s councillor for major events, sports, tourism, and fashion, for his role in driving growth in the capital’s tourism sector.

Tourism Strategy and Economic Impact

Onorato attributed the surge in tourism to “strategy and specific choices,” focusing on “major events that offer an additional reason to return to Rome or extend one’s stay.” Citing newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, Onorato stated that tourism generated €13.3 billion in Rome last year. He emphasized the importance of developing tourism in a way that is compatible with the city and its residents, saying, “We are working to continue developing tourism and make it increasingly compatible with the city and its residents.”

The record-breaking tourism numbers in Rome are a testament to the city’s enduring appeal and the effectiveness of its tourism strategy. With its rich history, art, architecture, and culture, Rome remains one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. As the city continues to attract visitors from around the globe, it is essential to balance tourism development with the needs of local residents and the environment.
