Idomeneo by Mozart Inaugurates the 2026 Opera Season at Teatro Comunale di Bologna

The Comunale Nouveau in Bologna recently hosted a spectacular performance of Idomeneo, an opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, marking the inauguration of the 2026 opera season. This event holds special significance as it is the last season to be held in the temporary space of Piazza della Constitution, which will revert to its original function as an exhibition pavilion in July. The Teatro Comunale di Bologna is expected to resume its activities in its redeveloped historic headquarters in Piazza Verdi in 2027.

A Complex and Enigmatic Work

Idomeneo, a complex and enigmatic opera, has returned to Bologna’s billboards for only the second time in 245 years, with the first performance taking place in 2010. This new staging is the brainchild of Neapolitan director Mariano Bauduin, a student of Roberto De Simone. Bauduin’s interpretation is set in a non-contemporary setting, with explicit references to the Metaphysical painting of the De Chirico and Savinio brothers, evident in Marianna Carbone’s costumes and Dario Gessati’s scenic elements. The background video projection of a turbulent sea adds depth to the performance, symbolizing the turmoil that Neptune’s orders bring to Idomeneo.

The Libretto and Performance

The libretto, written by Abbot Varesco, tells the story of Idomeneo, the old king of Crete, who promises to sacrifice the first person he meets on land to Neptune in exchange for saving his life and army from a storm. Tragically, this person turns out to be his own son. The story is intertwined with a double love story, featuring the three leading ladies envisioned by Mozart: Idamante, Ilia, and Elettra, played by mezzo-soprano Francesca Di Sauro, Mariangela Sicilia, and Salome Jicia, respectively. The tenor Antonio Poli masterfully portrayed Idomeneo, delivering a virtuosic aria ‘Fuor del mar ho un mare in seno’. The performance was conducted by Roberto Abbado, who gave great dramatic importance to the ensemble while highlighting the intimate moments, in perfect harmony with the Municipal Orchestra.

Critical Acclaim and Future Performances

The show received long ovations, with the only discordant note being the conclusion, which featured a long and boring ballet. Despite this, the performance of the Choir, prepared by Gea Garatti Ansini, was extraordinary. As the Teatro Comunale di Bologna looks forward to resuming its activities in its redeveloped historic headquarters, opera enthusiasts can expect more spectacular performances like Idomeneo.
