Former Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero Opens Up About Split with Carlos Alcaraz

Juan Carlos Ferrero, the former world No. 1 tennis player, has spoken candidly about his recent split with his “protege,” Carlos Alcaraz, after a seven-year coaching partnership. In an interview with Marca, Ferrero described the separation as “a difficult moment” and expressed his sincere emotions about the end of their successful collaboration, which yielded 24 titles, including six Grand Slams, and a No. 1 world ranking.

A Bittersweet End to a Successful Partnership

Ferrero, who won the Roland Garros title in 2003, acknowledged that the breakup was a mutual decision, stating that they “didn’t agree on some points.” However, he emphasized that their disagreement did not affect their friendship and left the door open for a potential return to Alcaraz’s team in the future. Ferrero also praised Alcaraz’s impressive charisma and playing style, admitting that it will be challenging for him to watch his former pupil compete without him.

A New Chapter for Alcaraz and Ferrero

Samuel Lopez, who was brought in to work alongside Ferrero, will now take over as Alcaraz’s coach. Ferrero expressed confidence in Lopez’s ability to handle the new role, citing his experience and the fact that he was already familiar with Alcaraz’s team. Ferrero also revealed that he has received offers to coach other players, including Jannik Sinner, but is not ready to commit to a new project just yet, still processing his emotions and taking time to appreciate the opportunity to be at home after eight intense years.

Reflections on a Successful Journey

Ferrero reflected on his time with Alcaraz, expressing pride in their achievements and gratitude for the opportunity to work with such a talented player. He highlighted Alcaraz’s rapid growth and impressive work ethic, stating that it was not easy to find a player who learns at such an incredible pace. Ferrero also acknowledged that Alcaraz may face challenges in the short term but is confident that he has the skills and support to overcome them and continue to succeed at the highest level.

Looking Ahead

Alcaraz’s first tournament without Ferrero will be the Australian Open, which he has identified as his seasonal goal. Ferrero believes that Alcaraz has the potential to win the tournament and complete the Career Grand Slam, despite the recent coaching change. As for Ferrero, he is taking time to focus on himself and his emotions, but remains open to new opportunities and challenges in the future.
