Abbey of Santa Maria del Monte Celebrates 1000 Years of Benedictine Spirituality
The thousandth anniversary of the Abbey of Santa Maria del Monte in Cesena, a significant place of Benedictine spirituality in Romagna, will be celebrated on Sunday, January 18, on the occasion of the feast of San Mauro, secondary patron of the diocese of Cesena-Sarsina. At 6 pm, the Eucharistic celebration will be held, presided over by Father Jeremias Schröder, abbot primate of the Order of Saint Benedict. This milestone marks a significant event in the history of the Abbey, which has been a cornerstone of the community for centuries.
A Place of Deep Significance to the People of Cesena
“The Abbey – comments the mayor Enzo Lattuca – is one of the oldest places to which the people of Cesena are deeply attached. For a thousand years, it has accompanied the history of Cesena, marks its profile, preserves its memory, and continues to be a place alive with spirituality, culture, and hospitality, often at the center of initiatives that enhance and promote its centrality by highlighting the rich collection of ex-votos.” The mayor’s words underscore the importance of the Abbey in the lives of the people of Cesena, who have a strong emotional connection to this historic site.
A Legacy of Courage and Selflessness
One of the most intense memories of recent years is linked to the commemoration of Don Odo Contestabile, recognized as Righteous among the Nations for his courageous and silent work carried out in favor of those who, during the Second World War, were placed in grave danger from the racial laws. “Don Odo particularly distinguished himself for his commitment to defending persecuted people and leaves us with a great lesson today: ‘It is always possible to do good’.” This legacy of courage and selflessness continues to inspire the community, and the Abbey remains a symbol of hope and resilience.
A Refuge in Times of War
With the passage of the front, the basement of the monastery welcomed numerous families from Cesena – around 700 people in total – who found refuge and safety not only from the Allied bombings but also from the German and fascist roundups. The bombings of October 1944 caused serious damage to the church and a large part of the monastery, profoundly affecting the monastic complex. However, the monks were able to rebuild and start anew, supported by the commitment of young volunteers and the extraordinary generosity of the Cesena community. This testament to the strength and solidarity of the community is a powerful reminder of the importance of the Abbey in the region’s history.

The thousandth anniversary of the Abbey of Santa Maria del Monte is a significant milestone, marking a century of devotion, spirituality, and community.
