Controversy Erupts Over Meeting Between Italian Deputy Prime Minister and British Far-Right Leader
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has sparked outrage after meeting with Tommy Robinson, the leader of the British far-right movement, at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT). The meeting has been widely criticized by opposition parties, who have condemned Robinson’s history of racist and supremacist views, as well as his criminal record. According to reports, Robinson has a series of criminal convictions and has spent time in prison.
Opposition Parties React to the Meeting
Democrat Matteo Orfini has attacked the meeting, stating that it represents a “further step in the involution of the League” and that Robinson is “not a political interlocutor: he is a neo-fascist agitator, supporter of Putin, protagonist of the anti-migrant revolts and point of reference for European extremist networks.” Orfini also noted that a man with his face obscured appeared in a video of the meeting, and called on Salvini to clarify who accompanied him. Nicola Fratoianni of Avs also questioned the meeting, asking what Foreign Minister Tajani thought about the incident and whether the Italian government tolerated “similar obscenities”.
Criticism of the Meeting
Chiara Gribaudo, a Democrat, also criticized the meeting, reminding Transport Minister Salvini that the Italian Constitution is “fiercely anti-fascist” and that inviting a “neo-Nazi” to an institutional place was “unconstitutional racism”. The opposition has pointed out that the meeting took place just before a week in which the far-right group Casapound will be allowed to hold a press conference in the Chamber, thanks to the League. The meeting has sparked widespread criticism and concern about the growing influence of far-right ideologies in Italian politics.
