Pope Leo’s Message to the Roman Curia: A Call to Simplicity, Humility, and Communion
In a heartfelt address to the Roman Curia, Pope Leo emphasized the importance of simplicity, humility, and communion within the Church. The Pope’s message, which marked his first Christmas greetings to the Curia, highlighted the need for a more extroverted and missionary Church, where structures do not impede the progress of the Gospel.
The Pope noted that “bitterness sometimes makes its way between us” when dynamics linked to the exercise of power, the desire to excel, and personal interests hinder the Church’s mission. He asked, “Is it possible to be friends in the Roman Curia?” This question underscores the need for a more authentic and compassionate approach to relationships within the Church.
The Importance of Mission and Communion
Pope Leo indicated “mission and communion” as “very urgent tasks ad intra and ad extra.” He explained that communion in the Church always remains a challenge, requiring conversion and a commitment to unity. The Pope emphasized that the Church is “the body of Christ,” and its members are called to be “builders of communion” in a synodal Church, where everyone collaborates and cooperates in the same mission.
The Pope’s message was inspired by the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii gaudium, which emphasizes the Church’s extroverted nature and its mission to the world. He stressed that the structures of the Church should not weigh down or impede the progress of the Gospel, but rather promote pastoral concern and evangelization.
A Call to Simplicity and Humility
In a separate address to employees of the Holy See, the Vatican Governorate, and the Vicariate, Pope Leo emphasized the importance of simplicity and humility. He encouraged them to learn from the birth of Jesus and adopt a style of simplicity, humility, and dedication in their work. The Pope noted that by doing their tasks with commitment and love, employees give praise to God and contribute to the Church’s mission.
To illustrate his point, the Pope donated a book, “The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lorenzo della Risurrezione, to the Curia. This small volume focuses on the experience and practice of the presence of God, as taught by the 17th-century Carmelite friar.
