In Spain, the small villages are the epitome of the country’s rural and authentic soul. From the northern coasts to the southern white villages, and from the Pyrenean landscapes to the mountains of the interior, these destinations offer unique experiences that are far removed from mass tourism. The association “Los Pueblos más bonitos de España” (The Most Beautiful Villages in Spain), founded in 2011, aims to promote the cultural and natural heritage of these small, sparsely populated villages, and currently comprises 122 villages with great historical and traditional charm.
A Journey Through 5 of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain
Our journey begins in the north, in the village of Llanes, located in the Asturias region. Overlooking the Cantabrian Sea and framed by the Picos de Europa mountains, Llanes is a village that combines history, nature, and maritime tradition. The medieval historic center is home to noble palaces, the basilica of Santa María del Conceyu, and narrow cobbled streets lined with squares, small shops, and terraces. The port is one of the symbols of Llanes, embellished by the “Cubos de la Memoria”, a work of urban art designed by Agustín Ibarrola, which blends contemporary creativity and maritime identity.
Next, we travel to the village of Carmona, located in the Nansa river valley, in the Cantabria region. Carmona is a village that preserves its traditional architecture intact and a unique rural atmosphere, with its stone houses, sloping roofs, and wooden balconies decorated with flowers. It is the ideal base for visiting the Oyambre natural park and the Cantabrian coast, as well as for exploring the hinterland along hiking trails, trekking routes, and horseback riding itineraries that pass through woods, pastures, and rolling hills.
Exploring the Mountains and Valleys of Spain
Our journey continues in the mountains of Aragon, where we find the village of Albarracín. Surrounded by mountains, Albarracín is home to a charming historic center characterized by the pink color of the houses, built with local chalk and clay, which create a harmonious and unique whole. The historic center is a true labyrinth of narrow streets, stairways, and panoramic corners, with the medieval walls climbing along the crest of the mountain, where the Alcázar stands, offering a beautiful view.
In the heart of the Arán Valley, we find the village of Artíes, an enchanting Catalan mountain village surrounded by alpine landscapes, crystal-clear rivers, and lush forests. The architectural heritage of the village is typical of the Pyrenees, with stone buildings and slate roofs, and among the most representative monuments, the Romanesque church of Sant Joan d’Artíes stands out, with its elegant bell tower, one of the symbols of the town.
A White Village in Andalusia
Finally, we arrive in the village of Zuheros, nestled on a spectacular rock formation in the heart of the Sierra Subbética, in the Andalusia region. Zuheros is a white village of great charm, with its profile dominated by a medieval castle perched on the rock, creating an iconic image that conquers with its whitewashed houses, steep streets, and flowered balconies. The village invites you to take quiet walks through alleys and panoramic squares, where time seems to pass slowly, and among the visits not to be missed, the Zuheros castle, of Arab origin, and the bat cave, one of the most important archaeological complexes in Andalusia.
