The association ‘Los Pueblos más bonitos de España’, founded in 2011 to enhance the cultural and natural heritage of small, sparsely populated villages, brings together 122 villages with great historical and traditional charm. Here, we’ll embark on an itinerary, from north to south, of 5 of the most beautiful villages to discover this year.
Exploring the North: Llanes and Carmona
Overlooking the Cantabrian Sea and framed by the Picos de Europa mountains, Llanes is a village in Asturias that combines history, nature, and maritime tradition. The medieval historic center is home to noble palaces, the basilica of Santa María del Conceyu, one of the best examples of Asturian Gothic, and narrow cobbled streets along which there are squares, small shops, and terraces. The port is one of the symbols of Llanes, embellished by the ‘Cubos de la Memoria’, a work of urban art designed by Agustín Ibarrola, which blends contemporary creativity and maritime identity.
