Valentino, the tribute to the “emperor” and the divinities of Alessandro Michele

Valentino’s Haute Couture Tribute: A Celebration of Beauty and Legacy

Today, in the city of love and fashion, Paris, Valentino showcased its spring/summer 2026 haute couture collection, titled Specula Mundi, designed by the esteemed Alessandro Michele. This marks the first fashion show for the maison since the passing of its founder, Valentino Garavani, on January 19th in Rome. As a tribute to the legendary designer, the show began with an excerpt from the film ‘Valentino: The Last Emperor’ by Matt Tyrnauer, where Garavani’s voice shared his early inspiration: “My sister took me to see movies for the first time, it was the dream of my life to see these beautiful women on the big screen. I was 13 years old, I decided that I wanted to create clothes for these women.”

Alessandro Michele’s Homage to Valentino Garavani

Michele, in a heartfelt letter distributed on the maison’s social networks before the show, expressed his intent to pay homage to Valentino Garavani, describing him as “a mythological figure, a foundational presence, an unavoidable reference.” Michele also took the opportunity to thank Giancarlo Giammetti, the designers who preceded him, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, and the entire team of the maison, from the premières to the fabric makers. He viewed his creative gesture as an “act of custody,” emphasizing that the beauty sought after by Valentino is “radical and patient attention to bodies, to forms, to the time that passes through them and preserves them.” This approach is not about filling an absence but safeguarding it.

Specula Mundi: A Performance Beyond Haute Couture

The fashion show was more akin to a performance, with a set inspired by the Kaiserpanorama, a 19th-century collective optical machine used for viewing stereoscopic images. The setup, with spectators seated around circular wooden structures, was not merely a historical quote or scenographic device but a means to question contemporaneity, media overexposure, and the speed of image consumption. For Michele, this setup served to redefine the understanding of haute couture, where clothes become “sacred presences that ask for pause, listening, disposition.” The collection itself was a journey through Hollywood icons, religious-inspired cloaks, serrated headdresses, and references to ancient divinities, all encapsulated in sumptuous velvets, giant collars, and maxi ruffs that resembled newly bloomed flowers.

A Maximalist Tribute to Valentino’s Legacy

The show opened with a tribute to the founder: a long, Valentino red dress with a slit on the thigh and a deep V-neck, setting the tone for a collection that celebrated the maximalism of Alessandro Michele. The designs were kept alive by the skilled workers of the maison, featuring headdresses decorated with enormous marabou feathers reminiscent of old Hollywood divas, velvet cloaks with sequins, embroidery, and atelier decorations. The red carpet dresses were sumptuous, even in their most sensual iterations with transparent cut-outs covered in crystals. The audience, which included Kristen Dunst, Dakota Johnson, Lily Allen, and Sir Elton John, applauded the collection, a testament to Michele’s ability to honor Valentino’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of haute couture.
